FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD NEEDS SPEECH THERAPY?

All kids develop differently and have different strengths. You can reference the following links for information on general speech/language milestones:

Speech sound development

Speech/Language Development from Kindergarten to Grade 5

HOW LONG WILL TREATMENT LAST?

For LSVT® LOUD, the gold standard is 1 assessment session and 16 additional treatment sessions. A follow up session at 6 months is recommended.

For speech and language therapy, this will depend on the individual's needs. Recommendations for therapy length and frequency will be discussed in the initial appointment. 30-45 minute sessions are typically recommended for 1-3 times per week.

WHAT HAPPENS IN AN ASSESSMENT?

An evaluation can last from about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending upon the areas being assessed. This gives the Speech Language Pathologist time to evaluate speech and language skills through standardized tests, observation, history information and parent report.

If warranted, referrals to other professionals may be made. These professional could include an Ear Nose and Throat doctor (ENT), Audiologist, Occupational Therapist (OT), Physical Therapist (PT), Orthodontist, etc.
